Too much of it can be damaging because it drys it out which creates split ends, dryness of course and possible breakage.
You should look for gel that is alcohol free since alcohol is what is the most drying and harmful ingredient in hair gels. Even Suave carries one though the more expensive ones contain better ingredients for the most part that is. There are products like Alterna Hemp seed styling gel or paste that is actually pretty healthy for the hair but ones like Dep and LA Looks I think they are called are really not good for the hair - if you are talking about a womens' hair and not your own, they also make alcohol free and ones with better ingredients for women as well - more of them of course.
Heat is not good for the hair. But - now they make dryers with tourmaline gems and ionic dryers that are more money but actually dry faster and with much less damage - totally true and worth the extra money. Brands like TIGI, CHI and T3 Tourmaline make the best dryers, straighteners, curling irons, etc. Drugstore versions of tourmaline and ionic dryers are just not the same - good dryers cost some money and last longer and make the hair much healthier. Also, dryers are not as harmful if they are used on a lower setting then high and not at the hottest setting. It is also recommended to not dry hair fully - just mostly and to blot the hair with a towel or wait for it to almost airdry fully before drying as to minimize time spent using a hair dryer. Brushing wet hair is really bad for the hair - you should always use a wide tootherd gentle comb while hair is wet.
It is good from time to time to put a mask in hair or some treatment made to leave in for 5-30 min or so and to dry it lightly with a dryer or heat it up in some way to absorb the product into the hair - this can help replenish the nutrients that hair has been deprived of. Even a warm towel can be used over a showercap to create the same effect - the dryer should be used over the showercap as well for this kind of treatment. Too many men never use conditioner and they should - they need to - it keeps the hair healthy and shiny ~ gives it what it needs
:o)
