I am pro- natural stuff. Rosemary is really good for your hair and it will make it dark and shinny. After washing your hair, rinse it with a strong tea made of rosemary. Leave it in and do it every time you wash it. Be careful though, Rosemary is a "jealous herb" and if you mix it or use it with another product like Henna, your hair would turn bad. You can use a natural, organic shampoo made of Rosemary too. Like Avalon Organics

I have the same issue you need to cut the tips and than use a color shampoo. Choose an dark brown or even the midnight black and it will help deepen your hair color.

Try a temporary rinse instead of a permanent dye. You'll have to do it more often, but it won't look as fake since you won't have the root problems of dye.

You will have to use a dye. But nothing permanent. Just go darker on the ends. Get a rinse.

what's your current color now?
if it's blonde... you should start shampooing with a brunnette color depositing shampoo (aveda is good) then.. glaze your hair with a color glaze (john frieda luminous color glaze in brilliant brunette).. however, there's no way blondes could get super dark without dyes.. to avoid that reddish brown you're talking about, use a semi-permanent hair dye (I've heard good compliments about the Clairol ColorFlirt semi-permanent dyes..)
if your red-head..do the shampooing and glazing method for blondes.. if it still is not darker, then you got to dye it.. same deal, use semi-permanent dyes to avoid the reddish brown thing..
if you hair is naturally dark (but not black).. but you want to give the color more "rich".. then.. use a shampoo for brunettes than DOESNT deposit color (if it deposits color, it could alter your current color..).. i recommend using john frieda brilliant brunnette shampoo AND conditioner (brings out natural color without depositing any..).. then use the john frieda color glaze 2x a week to keep you hair shiny!
if you have black hair.. then you have to use a permanent dye in order to strip the color out of your hair..
for light browns.. use color depositing shampoo.. then glaze your hair with the john frieda color glaze.. it should make your hair dark enough..

Use a semi-permanent dye (like Natural Instincts), they're non drying and can only be used to make your hair darker (or brighter), not lighter. They only last about 1 month, but it just washes out and you don't get roots or anything. Try using one of those color-depositing shampoos as well. You can find them in most drug stores.
