Any advice on growing out relaxed hair?

I've decided to grow out my relaxed hair because i have chemically straightened it for 8 years and it now needs a break. At the moment my hair has 2 months regrowth at the roots and isn't as bad as i thought it would be. However because i want to grow it out completely i was wondering if there is anything else i can do to help it grow out with less breakage. Im not terrible when it comes to dealing with hair so i know i can cope. People have suggested products to use which have helped so far - but i want know if there is anything else that im missing. How often should i go for a treatment at the hair salon? And how often would you suggest i trim my hair at the hair salon? At the moment my hair is about shoulder length.

Any accurate advice, would be appreciated!

Thanking you all in advance.

I am currently taking a break from my relaxed hair. It's not as easy as it seems because your new growth is textured differently. Once you get into the 4 month mark you may be tempted to go back to relaxing. One thing that works for me is to wash my hair once a week and as soon as I get out of the shower I comb it with a wide tooth comb and wrap it up- basically pull it back so that your new growth is straight. Blow dry it or air dry and flat iron it later. The sooner you flat iron it the better. If you are trying to go the all-natural route then I suggest using frizz ease and a curl serum and let your hair air dry. Rejuvinate curls by spritzing water and finger curling.

Hydration is key. Do hot oil treatments and stay away from moisturizer with mineral oil because its horrible for black people's hair.

Get your hair trimmed every 4-6 weeks depending on growth and care

You should go to the salon every two weeks for a hot oil treatment, a wash and a deep conditoner to keep the hair strong now that your going natural. They can determine when it's time to clip your ends and give you pointers on good hair care tips. I was so lost when I decided to do the same..good luck.

When growing out relaxed hair, your going to see a lot of breakage because the relaxed hair is dry and the only reason it really thrives is because of the relaxer. I would suggest getting it trimmed every 4 weeks, even thought you may see your hair getting shorter in the long run it will be much healthier if you get all of the dry, permed hair cut off so that it wont interfere with your new growing natural hair.

If you're not afraid and really want to go natural, I'd suggest to cut it all off (well, not bald, but where the new growth and permed hair meet). That's what I did. It was initially shocking to me because my relaxed hair was below my shoulders. People thought I was going through something. Anyway, the reason I say this is because the two textures will eventually start working against each other. Also, you really won't know your true texture until you cut off the relaxed hair. I initially wore braids, wigs and then just my cute little fro. Now I have hair way past my shoulders and it is the healthiest its been since I was a young girl. If you know nothing about hair, go to a salon and pamper yourself. I trim every 6-8 weeks.

It terms of breakage, I like to recommend a couple of reconstructors: Motions CPR (in the jar or the bottle), Aphogee treatment (follow the directions to the letter), Biolustre (follow to the letter), or any of the reconstructor. Also get your hair trimmed every 6 - 8 weeks. Good luck.

When my sister grew hers out she often had braids or got her hair straightened with a hot comb.

i am giving my hair a break too. i found that getting your ends trimmed every 4-6 weeks to get rid of split ends is very helpful. i would also recommend the pantine pro-v relaxed and natural breakage defense hair care products.... they work really great on my hair.
